Columbia University recently voiced their support for Chappell Roan after she faced controversy in the wake of her recent Call Her Daddy interview. The university spokesperson stated that they too believe stars should not have to engage with and speak out on political issues, and universities—particularly the Ivy League as the “stars of academia”—should also be exempt from such burdens as political consciousness. The university spokesperson made no comment regarding Chappell Roan’s previous political statements on LGBTQ+ rights, Palestine, and labor exploitation, all issues Columbia has had overwhelmingly positive press around. They said any further questions would be asking “undue emotional labor” from them, and they simply “do not make the salary to deal with that.”
