More than 400 Columbia students enter the hallowed halls of Chef Mike’s each day. And at least one of them has asked, “where does my ham come from?” Well, with the launch of Chef Mike’s order-ahead app, Columbia Dining is looking to expand their horizons on what technology can do for students and society alike.
Starting next week, the Chef Mike’s app will unveil a new page where students can “Meet Their Meat.” As they select a protein option for their sandwich, they will be presented with an image, name, and a short profile for the animal they’re about to consume. The page will also include the animals’ pronouns, hobbies, any children they have/had (I guess they’re orphans now), and how much they meant to their local agricultural communities.
The Fed talked to one student who utilized the new feature as they received their daily sub. “Between these buns lie the remains of Daisy Loo the Turkey. She was an avid gardener and mother of two poults who will be missed for her ‘smile that lights up the coop!’” the student beamed while proudly holding up their sandwich.
Due to the popularity of the “Meet Your Meat” feature, Chef Mike’s dedicated team of app developers are working to implement a live feed of prospective animals. Students will now be able to follow the meat process visually as their animal is transported from farm life directly to the slaughter house!
