Ice Breaker Ideas for Awkward Freshmen Situations

Graphic by Caitlynn Year

Do you find yourself alone in your freshman dorm on Friday nights? Do you wish you had that textbook group of friends to play hacky sack with on the lawns? If you find yourself longingly gazing through the window of amity or doodling in your notes about your lack of friendship bracelets, this article is for you. If you are a first-year still struggling to find a solid group of friends, here are some nifty ideas to keep those conversations flowing and those friendships blossoming.

  • Ask these friendly strangers: how many shapes can you make with your tongue?
  • Tell everyone your SAT score—a classic, bound to impress your peers!
  • Pose the question: if you had to kill one person in this room, who would it be?
  • Find out whether they wipe forwards or backwards, a classic personality test.
  • Open up to a deeper level with: what’s the most traumatic experience of your life? Tears encouraged!
  • Ask: What is your biggest insecurity, and also why do you walk like that?

There’s no shame in being a late bloomer. Finding your people takes time! But with practice, dedication, and vulnerability about each other’s bathroom habits, you will be sure to strike up a true friendship before parents’ weekend.
