Following over thirty years of service to the Morningside Heights and Columbia communities, 1020 will be shutting its doors for good tomorrow.
Yes, you heard it right. No longer are the days of snatching a cozy booth, speculating about the one-way mirrors in the bathroom, and sweaty 19 year old drunks throwing darts across the bar.
This tragic event for the community conveniently coincides with the start date of Columbia’s new president, Jennifer Mnookin. Students and community members alike have pointed fingers at Mnookin, infamous for closing down campus bars at her previous institutions.
In an interview with The Fed, Mnookin vehemently denied these accusations, claiming she’s spent the last few days before her tenure at Columbia “sipping mimosas and catching up on some Love Island.”
Management at 1020, however, had a different tale to tell. One longtime bartender said that they started receiving ominous notes in the mail immediately following the announcement of Mnookin’s presidency. In letters cut out from The Columbia Daily Spectator, 1020 received messages in the mail saying things like “watch your back, bitch” and “big momma coming to town.”
The 1020 bouncer told The Fed that Mnookin entered on a Tuesday evening, and when he let her in without asking for ID, she accused him of encouraging underage drinking. “I was pretty confident she was over 70. This was the final straw.
