Sonnet to Carmen Gates—from a struggling Carlton Arms resident

Graphic by Ava Lyon-Sereno

The Carman Hall gates are my gates to heaven

Feet throbbing from the walk

Pretty much from 107,

my legs feel every block

Though boasting spacious living spaces

TV’s and kitchens all updated

Carlton Arms is still quite a few paces

Away from College walk

But then I see a shining light

A truth aligned by fate

my tired tootsies soon take flight

When I see the open gate

Oh Carmen Gate, my Carmen gate!

I love you now as I loved you then,

As you save me 30 long seconds

On my walk of minutes, 10

You may be saying, silly gal!

30 seconds is not much time!

But I can tell you, dear old pal

without that gate, I would shrivel up,

and die.
