Barnard Imposes 104% Tariffs on Columbia Dining Swipes

To stem what President Rosenbury describes as the “pillaging” of Barnard dining halls by “so-called affiliate” Columbia dining halls, Barnard has enacted a 104% tariff on dining swipes used by Barnard students at Columbia dining halls. Beginning on April 2nd, all Barnard students must swipe twice (and a very small third time to signify the extra 4%) to enter any Columbia dining hall. This practice hopes to deter Barnard students from “subsidizing foreign dining halls with their swipes” and will continue Barnard’s protectionist policy that began with the single-queue line for campus entry.

Columbia has announced reciprocity tariffs on Barnard swipes, meaning Columbia students can expect to spend upwards of three swipes to enter Barnard dining halls. President Shipman, quoting Barnard Alumni Ronald Reagan (BC ‘32), advocated for an end to this protectionist policy: “Student-athletes should be able to eat wherever they want without penalty for their intimidating size.”
