Fall 2018 Courses Updated to Reflect Student Needs After Graduation

  • ANTH2007: CONSULTANT DIASPORA IN THE FINANCE WORLD

    • This course plans to examine the ways in which consultants have in recent years been displaced into all areas of the financial sector. We will focus on the reverberations of the diaspora in politics, art, cocaine quality, and teak furniture.

  • UN2003: CRITICAL BEACH-HOUSE STUDIES: FROM VINEYARD TO HAMPTON

    • This course will examine the ever-shifting landscape of beach houses in the twenty-first century, including such questions as: How long is too long for a “staycation”? What’s the best sandwich shop in Montauk? White or Red?

  • HIST4006: INSTITUTIONAL LEGACY: GUILTING THE CHILD

    • This course undertakes a survey of exemplary children who attended Mommy and Daddy’s alma mater in order to explore the effectiveness of an Ivy-League education. It will examine the relationship between obtaining a degree and remaining a part of this goddamn family, as well as the complex, dialectical concepts of being “mad” and/or “just disappointed.”

  • ECON4005: HUMAN EMPATHY

    • This course seeks to examine the dynamic, interdisciplinary practice of feeling empathy towards other human beings, as well as the structures and processes through which this empathy has been successfully commodified.

  • FILM3568: APPLYING FOR UNEMPLOYMENT (Now required for all majors)

  • ANTH4001: HE’S GOT YOUR EYES: BASTARD CHILDREN AND BEYOND

    • Pre-requisites: ANTH3001: Critical Mistress Studies. This course explores the multifaceted relationship of Americans to their illegitimate children, examining the legacies of adultery in personal financial assets, interpersonal relationships, and more. Topics covered will include: burner phones, child support, contraceptive methods, and Zoloft.

  • VIAR1738: BODIES IN SPACE: THE DISMEMBERED ASTRONAUT

    • Frequently used within the fields of Anthropology, Film, Art History, Creative Writing, and more, this course seeks to repurpose the academic phrase of “Bodies in Space” from meaning absolutely nothing to meaning at least kinda, sorta something.

  • UN3215: SEX AND SUBPOENA: KEEPING THE SECOND WIFE AT BAY

    • Over half of all American couples will be divorced by the time either partner reaches 50. In light of this, this course will examine the highly controversial and interdisciplinary field of second spouses, covering topics such as: creating emotional barriers, developing an eharmony profile, and disclosing herpes infections.

  • LING1020: NAME-DROPPING THE ALMA MATER

    • How do we assert our worth to those around us? How do we let people know we did NOT go to NYU? This course plans to interrogate name-dropping as a linguistic phenomenon across time, situating it within cocktail parties and the reproduction of social status. Students will familiarize themselves with cross-cultural strategies for making it seem like you just happened to mention where you did undergrad.
